This is being driven by researchers like Tim Spector and biohackers like Bryan Johnson, plus the wave of new independent studies supporting the heath benefits of olive oil polyphenols with regards to heart, brain and joint health. However the UK market is full of brands making big marketing claims and offering very few verified numbers.
Our mission here are at Early Harvest is to make finding a good quality high polyphenol much easier and we have created this guide to cut through the noise. All the oils we list have been independently tested by an external laboratory and we provide their certificates for full transparency.
All our oils are:

We have also listed our those which are organic certified or use organic practises for those looking for the cleanest oils from any pesticide use.

What are olive oil polyphenols?
Polyphenols are natural plant compounds found in extra virgin olive oil that give the oil a peppery finish and slight bitterness. They include 4 key ones called hydroxytyrosol, oleuropein, tyrosol and oleocanthal which have each been studied for their health benefits.
Polyphenol levels in extra virgin olive oil vary significantly depending on:
Olive variety — Coratina, Picual and Chetoui are naturally high-phenolic cultivars
Harvest timing — Early harvest EVOO' (October–November) are naturally higher in polyphenols due to the stage in the olive ripeness vs late-harvest oils
Extraction method — Cold extraction and cold pressed below 27°C preserves these nutrients
Freshness — polyphenols degrade with time, heat and light exposure. This is why its important they are contained in a dark bottle or tin and away from light and heat. This is also why buying the most recent harvest batch is key. Olive oil is not like wine - it does not get batter with age.
What are the different levels of polyphenols, and what is considered a high polyphenol oil?
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recognises a health claim for olive oils containing at least 250 mg/kg of polyphenols (measured as hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives). The claim states that these oils help protect blood lipids from oxidative stress.
In practice, the spectrum works like this:
High Polyphenol EVOO = Above 250 mg/kg — qualifies for the EU health claim.
Very High Polyphenol EVOO = Above 400mg/kg. Anything above 400mg/kg will start to have a stronger flavour, recommended for finishing and drizzling
Ultra High Polyphenol EVOO = Above 600 mg/kg — exceptional; rare, intense, best used as a condiment oil
At Early Harvest we specialise in ultra high polyphenol, olive oils. The listings in our collection all exceed 600 mg/kg and we also have sourced the highest polyphenol count olive oils available in the UK ranging between 1,000- 2,000 mg/kg.
Our high polyphenol olive oils lab-verifications and how to read a polyphenol certificate
Any reputable high polyphenol olive oil supplier should be able to provide an independent laboratory certificate - we only list those that can provide them for each new harvest and make these viewable with each listing on our site. Here's what to look for when reviewing a lab test certification:
Total polyphenols — expressed in mg/kg. Look for the figure, not just a label claim. Some certificates express this as "total phenols" or "phenolic compounds".
Free acidity — should be below 0.8% for extra virgin classification; the best oils are typically below 0.3%.
Peroxide value — should be below 20 mEq O₂/kg. Low peroxide means the oil is fresh and hasn't begun to oxidise.
Harvest date — always check this. Polyphenols degrade over time. An oil tested at 600 mg/kg at harvest may be significantly lower by the time it reaches you if it has been in a warehouse for 18 months.
Lab independence — the test should be conducted by an accredited third-party laboratory, not an in-house analysis.
Frequently asked questions:
What is the highest polyphenol olive oil available in the UK?
The highest polyphenol olive oil available in the Uk is Pamako from Greece with over 2,000mg/kg. However any olive oiil with over 1,000mg/kg level will provide the same health benefits. No research proves that health benefits increase after this level - in fact for some it might not be very healthy to exceed this. We recommend starting with an oil of around 600mg/kg and then working your way up the scale.
Do supermarket olive oils have high polyphenol levels?
Most supermarket olive oils contain very low levels of polyphenols, typically between 50 and 150 mg/kg, well below the EFSA health claim threshold of 250 mg/kg. This is largely because supermarket oils are blended from multiple harvests and origins to achieve a consistent, mild flavour profile. If polyphenol content is your priority, no supermarket olive oil (including premium own-label ranges) will be suitable for your needs.
Are high polyphenol olive oils organic?
No - not by default. However we have a list of the best organic ultra high polyphenol olive oils to shop from.

Can you cook with high polyphenol olive oil?
Yes, high polyphenol olive oils are perfectly suited for cooking. In Spain, Italy and Greece, many households cook on a daily basis with high polyphenols olive oils. However given their taste profile and the break down of polyphenols with heat - for those looking to add them to their diet for health benefits we suggest using them for dipping, dressing and coating vs frying or oven cooking.
