Tim Spector believes High Polyphenol Extra Virgin Olive Oil for Health and Longevity

Prof. Tim Spector is urging people to consume high polyphenol extra virgin olive oil to reduced a number health risks - including cancer.

The well respected well-being guru says high polyphenol olive oil is something everyone should be consuming for better health.

"While many of us were taught to fear fat, research shows that diets rich in extra virgin olive oil are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and cancer."

He adds: "Many of these benefits are attributed to the high polyphenol count in extra virgin olive oil. Not only do these polyphenols exert powerful anti-inflammatory effects but they also promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, contributing to good gut health."

The podcast also touches upon the seasonality of olive oil, saying that it's important to consume the oil fresh, from the latest harvest year to maximise the polyphenol dose within the oil, as they can degrade over time. A lot of this degradation happens within the supermarket distribution chain, which means it may not be the most optimal way to get your olive oil. Instead, if you can find a producer to buy from directly, you can cut out this chain and make sure you get your oil as fresh as possible.
